Sarah Chang Plays in Louisville

Violinist Sarah Chang is in Louisville to perform Mendelssohn’s concerto as part of the Louisville Orchestra’s Fanfara – Season Opening Gala. Classical 90.5’s Alan Brandt talked to Ms. Chang about her music and career.

Orchestra Seasons Ready to Roll

The arts season is about to start in metropolitan areas across the country.  Louisville Orchestra’s (Sundays at 6 pm) Fanfara concert gala is set for September 3. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (Fridays at 8 pm) performs Mozart’s Requiem in October. Gustav Mahler is featured prominently in the New York Philharmonic’s (Saturdays at 9 pm) new season. French actor Gérard Depardieu joins the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Sundays at 9 pm) in a Berlioz Spectacular in September.The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra begins its new season in September before launching a fall European tour later in the month.

Meanwhile, Bernard Haitink returns to the Concertgebouw (Sundays at 4 pm) to lead the orchestra in three concerts in September.  Symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler will be on the Berlin Philharmonic’s bill with conductor Simon Rattle on Friday, August 27. And the season in Vienna began in full force this week.

Louisville Youth Orchestra Holds Auditions

The Louisville Youth Orchestra is ramping up for its 2010-2011 concert season with auditions starting August 28 and running through September 5. The five different LYO ensembles perform concerts throughout the area, and will be featured in several high-profile events, including a concert with My Morning Jacket and a side-by-side concert with the Louisville Orchestra. Auditions are held at Louisville Collegiate, and you can download an application here. For more information call (502) 896-1851. Stephen Foster

The Stephen Foster Story Musical has been a Bardstown tradition for over 50 years. The outdoor performance explores the life of Stephen Foster through his songs, with a full cast of local singers and soloists from around the country. David Hedrick, the show’s music director, brought the cast for a preview performance at Classical 90.5. You can find out more about the live performance in bardstown at stephenfoster.com

National Symphony comes to Kentucky

The National Symphony Orchestra will spend a week in residency thanks in part to the Kentucky Arts Council.  The NSO has previously spent residencies in West Virginia, Arkansas and South Carolina.  Hugh Wolff will conduct the NSO in their 2011 residency, which will take the orchestra across the state to Louisville, Owensboro, Paducah, Lexington, Somerset, and Florence.  Read Tony McVeigh’s story and the NSO’s press release. Jersey Boys

Music Theatre Louisville's 2010 Season

Music Theatre Louisville’s summer 2010 season included three productions: “1776,” “Nunsense,” and the perennial favorite “Annie” featuring Madelyn Steurer as the title character and Dan Bullington as Daddy Warbucks. Classical 90.5′s Scott Dowd spoke with the Hoosier duo about the production.
